PAT Testing

PAT Testing in Dereham and the Surrounding Areas

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is a process used to ensure the safety of electrical appliances in homes, offices and other commercial properties. Its main purpose is to identify any potential electrical faults or defects that could cause an issue and advise accordingly so property owners can ensure their appliances comply with all electrical safety testing regulations. Our electricians at Garner Electrical Services carry out PAT Testing and electrical safety checks for clients in Dereham and the wider Norfolk region.

Other aspects of our electrical work include full and partial rewiring services and the installation of new consumer units in both old and new properties.

Identification of Appliances

The first step is to identify all portable electrical appliances that require testing. This includes the likes of computers, kettles, microwaves, power tools, and extension leads.

Classification of Appliances

All appliances are classified into different categories based on type, class and usage. This classification determines the frequency of testing required for each item.

Initial Visual Inspection

This is carried out to check for obvious signs of damage, wear and tear, loose wires or any other visible issues. This step is essential before any electrical testing is conducted.

Electrical Appliance Testing

This part of our PAT testing service involves using a variety of test equipment to check the electrical safety of the appliance, for example:
  • Earth continuity testing – this ensures the appliance is properly grounded in compliance with safety testing regulations

  • Insulation resistance testing – here, we check for any breaks or damage in the insulation of the appliance

  • Earth leakage testing – this identifies any leakage of electrical current to the earth, which could be dangerous

Functional Testing of Appliances

Our electricians at Garner Electrical Services perform this procedure for our Dereham clients to ensure all appliances operate correctly and safely in accordance with legal regulations.

Reporting

A record is kept of the test results for each appliance. This documentation includes several details, such as the appliance's identification, test date, test results, and our company name. Based on our findings, each appliance is marked as either having passed or failed.
If an appliance fails our PAT testing, it will be tagged as unsafe and should be taken out of service until it can be repaired by a qualified electrician and retested. If the appliance cannot be repaired, it should be replaced.
The frequency of retesting depends on the appliance's classification. Some appliances need to be tested more frequently than others.
